Wild Horse’s synth-fuelled indie single ‘Tangled’ conveys the emotional toll of long-distance relationships

Wild Horse is entering their Unrecorded regulars era with their newest single ‘Tangled’, which completes their hat-trick after songs ‘Cougar’ and ‘Don’t Want To Go’ were previously featured. What we love about this band is how they’re always keeping us on our toes by challenging their own creativity and pushing the boundaries of their indie-pop sound beyond what is expected. This really pays off in ‘Tangled’, which is a bombastic synth-fuelled track with seriously addictive lyrics and some high energy moments that make it perfect for both a gig and the dancefloor. Clearly magic happens when all three of the band members (Jack Baldwin, Henry Baldwin & Ed Barnes) chime in on songwriting duties. It also doesn’t hurt when you’ve got a stellar producer on hand as is the case with Matt Leppanen and had the opportunity to record at The Animal Farm Music studio in London.

Back to track itself, ‘Tangled’ is an enticingly romantic track about the struggles of trying to maintain a long-distance relationship. It might seem easier in these days of instant connectivity, but that doesn’t negate the emotional and mental pressures that such relationships can have on those involved. This is where Wild Horse do something really clever, by soaking their usual indie rock-meets-pop sound in 80s-inspired synths, they set the song’s narrative into the context of pre-internet days. These swirling electronic elements mirror the intense emotional upheaval that often brings many of these long-distance loves to an unavoidable end. Although, as far as this story goes, we’re left wondering where that modern-day Romeo and Juliet ended up after all. Whatever happens isn’t the concern of the nearly three minutes that we’re invited into Wild Horse‘s indie-pop realm, instead we should just go along for the ride enjoying each percussive placement, well-strung chord, and dulcet vocal tone.

You can listen to ‘Tangled’ in our Shades of Pop playlist.
