You might have come across the concept of having “your socks knocked off” when referring to an incredible moment that induces shock, awe, and applause. For the new song from Berlin-based troupe Strange Souvenirs, we would like to posit an alternative idea of having your socks teased off before the final brilliant reveal. Let us explain.
‘Coma Cluster’, the industrious new song from fraternal duo Strange Souvenirs, appears at first to be a slow and sultry slow-burner in the vein of Jungle, Balthazar, or Gorillaz. What’ll strike you initially is the slinking bass line and clunking drum beats which both work to underpin the cinematic atmosphere of reverberated guitars, hushed vocals, and sparkling keys. It’s such a confident sound, one that’s paralleled by the self-assured lyrics, “I won’t listen to what they say, I wanna fuck things up my own way, I won’t imitate what they do, I can’t wait ’til it breaks us in two.” It exudes a laidback, hedonistic, laissez-faire approach to life, but as we said, that’s only the impression that sits on the surface.
You’ll notice a distinct gear shift at the 1:40 minute mark when a rustling drum roll and intense-yet-soulful backing vocal instructs you to “look at all the flies.” Sure enough, this wall of sound builds up creating an immense sense of anticipation before the track explodes into its final form. That lethargic rhythm is nowhere in sight as a frantic soundscape takes over. Unrelenting drums, fearsome guitar riffs, and unrestrained vocals have been meshed together in an impossibly intricate matrix. You can’t help but let this song’s second half command your attention, encouraging you to let loose.
Recorded at The Famous Gold Watch Studios in Berlin, with producing, arrangement, mixing and guest vocals from Cameron James Laing, ‘Coma Cluster‘ is an unforgettable introduction to Strange Souvenirs.
