Delivering the unexpected in ‘I Got This’ from The Muster Point Project featuring Kick Horns

As we approach each weekend, we often find ourselves looking for something that’ll shake off those mid-week blues and encourage us to let loose for the days of relatively freedom ahead. One track that absolutely does such a trick is ‘I Got This’ from Canadian multi-instrumentalist Kevin Franco, aka The Muster Point Project. This instantly uplifting single also boasts UK institution the Kick Horns, as well as novelist Geoff Moore who has collaborated with Franco on the entire upcoming EP.

From the very start, this single assures the listener that we’re in for a good time with those thumping drums, fiery guitar riff, and optimistic rhythmic guitar. It really sets the tone for the jovial, yet ironic, narrative encapsulating in these classic rock-pop motifs. As you’ll discover, the song’s protagonist is a larger-than-life character who isn’t afraid of boasting about all of his life achievements, like his career success, girlfriend, good looks, and… an STD. Yep, just when a guy thought he had it all, he only went and added to that collection. It’s great to hear such a completely self-aware and humorous single that plays on the listener’s assumption before providing a twist that no one could have expected.

Speaking about the inspiration behind ‘I Got This’ is close collaborator Moore:

“I worship Chess Records artists and those guys knew how to boast. The inspiration for this song was the baseball verse in Chuck Berry’s ‘Brown-Eyed Handsome Man.’ A 2-3 count is impossible and that line has always bothered me. I wanted a lyrical hook, a simple one but one that could be twisted or taken in a couple of ways so the story would have a punchline.”

The accompanying video for ‘I Got This’ features only a pair of feet, yet the skipping and dancing manner in which they traverse the cityscape reflects the character’s high-on-life, somewhat delusional attitude. Another visual aspect to the song is the artwork, which some of you might recognise as the staple of classic art, The Judgement of Midas, which was chosen since Midas with his golden touch also got more than he bargained for in the end.

You really can’t help but chuckle along with this song, but between the laughs, it’s just a really good time. We love those fast-moving rhythms, joyful horn section, old-school strings; all of it works together in an off-kilter symphony, much like the patterns of life.

Literary and musical history is littered with cautionary tales, but few sound as jolly as The Muster Point Project‘s ‘I Got This’.
