It’s a well established and universal truth that life is hard. It doesn’t come easy to anyone, but one aspect of this struggle that is optional and yet everyone seems to opt in for, is faking that everything is fine. We mask our pain, anger, frustration and sadness behind a smile and polite small-talk (especially here in the UK), whether that be due to some level of embarrassment, misguided self-protection, or simply a habit of learned behaviour. It’s especially evident in this social media pivoted world, and it’s exhausting! This is why we’ve found The Trusted‘s new single ‘Doomsday’ so refreshing; it doesn’t just let the mask slip, it rips it off, throws it in the trash and sets the whole thing on fire.
As The Trusted‘s songwriter and lead singer Tom Cunningham (who performs alongside Dave Batchelor, Dale Holt-Mead, and Fin Cunningham) lays out for us, ‘Doomsday’ is “a loud rocket-fueled cry for help; a psychological apocalypse.” These themes of destruction and crisis come through so strongly in the track’s opening as an unbridled outburst of thunderous drums and burning guitars. Underpinning these elements is a grooving, rich bass line reminiscent of fellow Brits The Arctic Monkeys, which serves as an anchor point in song that threatens to tip over into pure chaos at any moment. Acting as a bridge between the grounding bass and devastating drums and guitars is Cunningham’s articulate lead vocal, which expressively details the inner turmoil that’s triggered by everything falling apart.
That brooding yet passionate sensation at the core of ‘Doomsday’ is drawn from the times we’re living in right now. Here, Cunningham returns to state, “We’re living in a world on the on the brink of war and collapse, yet ‘Doomsday ’is a song about a more personal Armageddon. We all have our own, in-built doomsday clocks and sometimes, our minds can reach a breaking point.”
This “breaking point” is exactly why we need fearsome, potentially eardrum ruining, music like that of The Trusted. They’re helping listeners towards a cathartic release where you can scrunch your face up in admiration of this energetic guitar-led rock and be assured that you’re not alone in those feelings.
