rom the very start, ‘I Don’t Believe In You’ grips listeners by the ear drums with its commanding presence, constructed via pounding drums and a stuttered electric guitar. This bold sound is the work of Brian Lambert, a determined musician from Denton, Texas, who doubles up as the lead singer of alt-rock band The Star Crumbles. A tireless creative, he also often collaborates with other artists, like this track’s featured name Jr Moz Collective. Interestingly, this song started out as a live performance piece by Jr Moz Collective, with Lambert taking up production duties, but after hearing ‘I Don’t Believe In You’ in its fully glory, it soon became clear that this musician couldn’t part himself from the song’s powerful message.
Noticeably, the single draws on lates 80s and early 90s rock motifs, including the raw vocals, unfiltered instrumentation and atmospheric synth keys. There’s something unwaveringly defiant about this track, a feeling that’s propelled by Lambert‘s gravelled declarations, such as “I don’t believe in you, you oughta know that I never did.” Throughout, the lyrics wrestle with an emotionally-driven inner conflict; between letting go of the past and clinging onto the impact that one’s history. In particular, it’s about the toll that one person’s judgement of you has throughout your life, long after the initial injury, their words can linger and play havoc with your sense of self.
As such, ‘I Don’t Believe In You’ has become an anthem of conviction, determination and self-belief. Steeped in the rough-and-tumble rock of those nostalgic decades, this track is designed to be a cathartic release, one that’ll have you feeling a little lighter afterwards. And if not, then a few more plays of this incredible single surely can’t hurt.
