‘Gamble’ is the new collaborative single from two Phoenix, Arizona artists with distinctly different genres but found common ground in this romantic track. Mandy Slate, who now calls Los Angeles her home, has been making waves with her dreamy indie-pop sound this past year. While rapper Luv Leek is gradually building up a reputation as a talented lyricist and performer. What’s so interesting about this new track is that it’s perfectly balanced between their two styles, keeping the listener on their toes and allowing space for plenty of creative expression.
The track itself centers on an incredibly true statement, “Love is a gamble and we roll the dice,” which you’ll find delivered by Slate‘s saccharine vocals in the hooky chorus. It’s a fact of life that we can never guarantee the outcome of a relationship; we have to trust the process, even if that means dealing with some heartbreak along the way. It’s that unwanted outcome that we hear in ‘Gamble’, with both Mandy Slate and Luv Leek representing the two sides of a break-up. In fact, this track is all about the storytelling as the singer’s dreamy vocals and the rapper’s melodic flow ruminate on what went wrong and maybe how things could have turned out differently. This is accentuated by the minimalistic guitar loops, laidback beatwork and complementary production that allows these confessional lyrics to stand-out as the track’s focal point.
Having grown up together, it’s brilliant to see two young artist supporting each other’s work and we hope to hear them back on a track together in the near future.
