‘Pockets’ from British alt-pop project Low Girl is nothing short of a breath of fresh air. Innovative, emotionally intelligent and sonically arresting, you’ll be completely transported by this supremely dreamy-yet-upbeat track. This is also only their fifth single and it’s the first that fans will have heard from Low Girl since the release of their highly rated EP, Uh Oh.
Not only did this brief hiatus give Sarah Cosgrove (the multi-instrumentalist behind the moniker) some time to pen some fresh new tracks, but it also gave her time to reflect on the person that she’s becoming. She reflected on the different cross-roads and what-ifs in life.
Here the musician goes into further detail: “My life was all over the place when I wrote this track, and there was a real sense of anticipation and being on the edge of something. I’m grappling with trying to figure out who this person I’ve bloomed into is, all the while trying to find some tangible light to look to. There’s an element of deluding yourself into believing in an impossible dream. I imagine this warm, settled imagery of the afternoon and how I feel like I never quite reach it. My way of coping with all of those issues has been to write something where I kind of trivialise and try and laugh about it. Is that healthy? Who knows!”
While the context surrounding ‘Pockets’ was one of anxiety, chaos and questioning, the track itself sounds like the confident mirror image. It’s as though the preppy and self-assured composition was designed to be a counter-weight to the uncertain lyrics. That being said, you can still hear layers of emotion in the subtle word choices like a desperate “where are you going?” or the continued consideration for a broken connection in “I hope you’re fine.” It’s these simple, straight-forward phrases that occur so much in our daily lives an as such we’re able to relate even more deeply with the sentiment of ‘Pockets’.
The fact that Low Girl handles the complex and nuanced feelings set at the core of ‘Pockets’ with such ease and stylistic flair bodes extremely well for their future endeavours. Watch this space!
