Today, we’re showcasing another up-and-coming British band who you should absolutely be keeping an eye on this year. They’re Small Talk, the Bournemouth alt-rock quartet and they’ve recently delivered an electrifying punch with their latest single ‘Always Always’. Produced by Alex Quinn and masterfully mastered by Robin Schmidt, this track typifies the group’s signature style with distorted guitar riffs, pounding drums, and dynamic basslines.
Fresh from a UK tour, you can really hear that live stage presence on ‘Always Always’; it’s a special kind of musical intensity that evokes both hedonistic euphoria and deep contemplation. While it’s alternative at its core, this fusion of guitar-driven rock-pop, combining infectious melodies with deeply relatable lyrics also has so much commercial potential.
The song unfolds with storytelling verses that gradually build to an atmospheric pre-chorus, creating an emotional crescendo that explodes into an irresistibly catchy and yearning chorus. The lead vocals add a melancholic punch, beautifully contrasting the uplifting guitar-driven backdrop that reminds the audience of profound nostalgia. Indeed, the context for this track is about longing for a dear friend and by extension the days of their shared youth.
Here the band explain: “Always Always was written about a close friend from my hometown of Bournemouth who moved away. It’s that sense of nostalgia and longing for the moments that we would spend together, completely oblivious to what was happening around us. It highlights the gradual decline of our town, the friends that we lost and the memories that slowly faded away.”
Although relatively early in their career, Small Talk clearly have the ability to blend emotional depth with a vibrant musical landscape, making them an act to watch in the alt-rock scene.
