Some songs are easy to review, a few seconds in and the words come flowing forth. However, other tracks are not so simple as to summarise into words, not because they’re bad, far from it. It’s those really good songs, the ones that immediately connect with you on an innate level that are the hardest to describe. The debut single ‘Nobody’s Home’ from Los Angeles based artist Matya is one of these listening experiences. On several occasions since first hearing ‘Nobody’s Home’, we’ve listened and enjoyed every morsel of this indie gem and still found our words paling into comparison to this unparalleled introduction. That being said, this is a music blog after all, so let’s dive in to the intoxicating universe of newcomer Matya.
Self-describing her style as avant-rock, the artist beckons listeners in with reverb-soaked guitar and bass. This minimalist opening is the backdrop to Matya‘s femme-fatale vocal, which gradually builds up in intensity as she depicts the isolated life of someone who exists in their mind more than in the real world. As much as we love this melancholic side of the song, it’s when this track kicks into high gear that really caught our attention. All of that suppressed emotion from earlier in the song ruptures through as an explosion of fuzzy rock guitars, grungey bass, kinetic drums and a rebellious vocal performance. This moment of release embraces the songwriter’s daydreamy tendencies. She triumphantly throws the declaration “nobody’s home!” back in the face of anyone who might criticise her.
Accompanying the single is a stylish music video that brings Matya‘s visceral debut to life through the stereotype of the depressed and unfulfilled housewife. This character soon enough breaks free in her domestic environment, finding ways to rebel such as smashing glasses, turning the garden hosepipe on herself, and drawing with lipstick on the mirrors.
In short, ‘Nobody’s Home’ is a wonderfully destructive, vibrantly expressive, and ultimately liberating debut.
