Who says pop music can’t be both insightful and fun? Certainly not Los Angeles based artist Morgan Paros whose uplifting style leans into the confessional pop sub-genre. Influenced by the work of those that she admires, such as Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo, this emerging solo act seeks to express her creativity on these two levels of sincerity and playfulness. This is exactly what you’ll hear in new single ‘What Love Is’, a lively, rhythmic track about shedding her rose-tinted glasses when it comes to relationships.
There are few new songs we feature that make you want to dance or sing-along while also recounting tough memories. In her lyrics, Paros depicts scenes from a bad relationship, for example, “I bend, we break, I haven’t learned, your overtures are often misdirected.” These thoughtful lyrics are embedded in a canopy of punchy drums, a bouncing bass line, passionate guitars, and atmospheric synths. What makes ‘What Love Is’ so powerful and convincing as a narrative is that it’s inspired by the artist’s personal life.
As she candidly shares: “The song pulls a lot from my experience of being married young and having to get a divorce — learning about what love actually is the hard way!”
It’s only by opening up about these shrouded parts of our lives, that our perceived failures can instead be seen as empowering triumphs. Through Morgan Paros‘ own painful experience, she was able to recognise unhealthy relationship patterns, something that eventually led to her current happy situation. This single was written at home with her longtime partner and three-times Grammy Award producer, mixer and engineer, Jeremy Hatcher, and they also co-produced the track together. It’s evident from the result of their collaboration that their connection is a profound one.
‘What Love Is’ was then mixed by Matt Wolach and mastered by Randy Merrill, who along with Hatcher, are the production team behind Harry Styles’ landmark album Harry’s House.
With a successful release of this single and another track soon to follow featuring Ella Vos, Morgan Paros has everything she needs to propel this project to the next level.
