‘Tough Love’ is Genevieve Mile’s charming alt-pop tale of heartbreak

Our second Midlands creative of the day is Genevieve Miles, from the bustling metropolis of Birmingham. Fresh from her debut UK tour, Miles continues to make her mark in the contemporary pop scene with new single ‘Tough Love’, which beautifully captures the essence of first love and the wisdom gained through life’s trials.

Imbued with subtle grooves, ‘Tough Love’ slowly unfolds, enveloping listeners in a lush soundscape characterized by rich strings, mesmerizing vocal harmonies, charming 80s synths and drum machines. Miles‘ ethereal vocals carry the weight of her heartfelt lyrics, delving into the complexities of accepting a broken heart. As she sings, “I don’t love you anymore,” the songwriter offers an alternative perspective on the pain of letting go and hearing those brutally honest words. Yet, within this heartbreak, she finds moments of catharsis and gratitude for the lessons learned. The track becomes a celebration of resilience and self-discovery.

Here, Genevieve Miles offers her own interpretation of the song:

“It’s a song about letting go, accepting your broken heart, accepting that pain might be sticking around a while longer but also seeing that it was probably time for you to be given some tough love anyway. The brutal honesty when someone tells you they don’t love you anymore, when you’re fresh out of your teens, that’s gonna mess you up for a while. This song is a moment of bliss in the terrible grief of heartbreak – knowing that you gave your absolute all and it still wasn’t enough – but also looking back at how young I was, the innocent way you love for the first time. It’s gratitude for the harsh lessons of heartbreak: your skin is thicker, the relationship you’ve built with yourself in that time – it hurt bad, but it was about time to get out in the world on my own anyway.”

‘Tough Love’ is an exciting look ahead to Genevieve Miles‘ upcoming EP.
