SWIIMS’ ‘All I Die For’ is the tactile enmeshment of shoegaze, new wave & indie-rock

‘All I Die For’ is the outstanding introduction to SWiiMS’ (composed of Mai Diaz Langou, Colin Thompson, Cian O’Ruanaidh) forthcoming full-length album, Into The Blue Night. Built around dreamy alt-pop melodies, shoegaze structures, and washed-out guitars, this track is an unconventional evocation of the feeling of falling hard in love.

While there are moments of more restraint, this song is largely steered by quick-tempo percussion, that gives off the sensation of running. Perhaps running into the arms of your love or running away from the weight of your own emotions. In this way, ‘All I Die For’ is a very tactile track, one that immerses the listener into an array of textures and melodies. There’s the New Wave-esque synths that add a nostalgic and cinematic flair. The intricately woven guitars that imbue the track with the bright lustre of newfound passion. And of course, we can’t forget the mesmerising lead vocals; breathy in expression, but firm in conviction. It’s Langou’s soothing tone that’s guaranteed to put the listener at ease, leaving you with no other choice but to go along for the serene shoegazey ride.

Even though this is our first listen of the Toronto three-piece’s music, we’re already enthralled. Not only did the languid and moody soundscape appeal to us on an intrinsic level, but the overall listening experience plunged us into a well of deep thought. It’s a pensive state that that we’re looking forward to returning to in the run-up to the release of SWiiMS‘ first full-length record.
