Honey Motel’s thriving comeback ‘The Matinee’ is a must listen

Our second Liverpudlian band of the day is Honey Motel with their mind-blowing new song ‘The Matinee’. This release follows an 18-month hiatus during which the band used their time wisely to redraft their identity. As such, not only does this track release signal the group’s comeback, it also represents their reinvented sound that’s even more vibrant and purpose-driven than what came before. Without further ado, let’s take a break at the Honey Motel.

As you’ll hear, this track is flush with contemporary psych-rock motifs, pop-informed hooks, and an indie-rock core. The versatility of sound here gives ‘The Matinee’ such a deeper, more layered impression that gives realism this uncanny anthem about anxiety, apprehension, and unfulfilled dreams.

To give you some more contexts, the band say that this track is about, “The anxiety of getting stuck in the show before the show. Never taking the final step into the closing stage of something you’ve be working towards due to fear, anxiety, apprehension of what the outcome may be. The thought of forever spending eternity in the matinee is unendurable.”

This message is particularly poignant for today’s society in which anxiety is being diagnosed on an unprecedented scale. One might think that such an upbeat-sounding track as this is downplaying the problem, but it’s quite the opposite; Honey Motel are giving a voice to their anxious listeners and in the most relatable way they can. The pop-orientated hooks encourage you to sing along with the cathartic lyrics, especially in that explosive chorus that bursts into life with rolling drums, thrashing guitars, energetic bass, and soaring vocals. There’s so many clever and painfully true lyrics to chose from, but one of your favourites is, “the youth foundation floats on things that don’t make sense in a real way.” This gives you a real taste of the band’s piercing perspective that cuts through all of the BS out there.

Knowing that the band have been busy crafting more music over the past year and a half, we can’t wait to hear what they have in store next. It should be real special if ‘The Matinee’ is anything to go by.
