Most of you reading this will have probably played the classic party game truth-or-dare at least once in your life. It’s a simple enough concept, confess a secret or do something contrary to your usual behaviour. However, what’s really the difference between two two? San Diego band WYO brings a challenge to this traditional separation with his suitably titled new single ‘Truth or Dare’.
This is a high-octane anthem that balances rock-pop percussion with synth-driven melodies, giving the impression of a timeless track. It’s reminiscent of The Strokes or The Killers, especially in the sultry vocal performance that tempts the listener to let go of their inhibitions. As WYO‘s frontman Andy Sorge effectively sings, “cancel all your plans, we’re coming through, and we’re coming for you.” It’s hard to resist this kind of personal attention, particularly when the artist offers up such an enticing platter of punching drums, spiking guitars, cinematic synths, and a stand-out chorus that you have no choice to sing-along to.
Ultimately, ‘Truth or Dare’ is about following through on those promises we makes ourselves; it’s about being unafraid to chase those dreams. Returning to the lyrics once again, Sorge imparts some essential wisdom, “The truth is always hiding there, as the leaves change to gold.”
