As the days become shorter and the air becomes frostier here in the Northern hemisphere, one’s mind can’t help but turn to what lurks in the shadows; what comes out to play at night; what relishes in the unknown. One response to this cerebral wandering is provided by Norwegian artist EHLE (the moniker of Elsbeth Rehder) whose new single ‘SURRENDER’ is an alt-rock and dark-pop inspired dive into the alluring and mysterious power of dark femininity.
As the artist herself explains, “The song is a call to embrace the inner witch, a celebration of dark femininity, and an ode to the allure of being in control. It’s the anthem for the witchy alter ego that secretly longs to reside in a mystical forest, casting spells and enchanting the world as a mesmerizing femme fatale.”
From the very start, EHLE sets the mood with stuttered electric guitars, scaling bass notes, and her sensual voice, which takes on the role of a black-cat temptress. The song creates a space where one can fully and unapologetically claim their femme fatale side. While some elements are consistent, such as the post-industrial percussion and gritty guitars, as the song progresses, the artist noticeably turns up the heat. It’s also the passion rises that more of the kitsch western influences come to the fore, reminding one of the austere intensity of America’s expansive plains and deserts.
Produced by Ola Frøyen, it was an unbelievably short songwriting session of just thirty minutes that ELHE penned this americana-infused fireball. Beguiling and potentially dangerous, ELHE’s ‘SURRENDER’ is potent stuff. No doubt you’ll be hooked before long.
