As much as we might be aware that life is hard, it can still come as a surprise, especially when that struggle continues despite what solutions you might try. It’s in those moments when we need to dig deep to find some inner strength. Providing a source of motivation in this department is the enigmatic grassroots trio Castlecombe Drive with their newest single ‘Blue Skies’. What’s essential to this relatable piece of songwriting is that it comes from a personal source. As the Anglo-Irish group state, “for us, […] real life is tough but we’re tougher kind.”
The band’s perseverance and determination is distilled into this indie rock-pop track. It’s a refreshing wake-up call that builds on brutal honesty, “this life we live might be killing me,” with tight guitar strums, gritty bass notes, and anticipation drums. Soon enough, any negativity is swept away with the poignant metaphor of “blue skies on a Monday morning.” All it takes is that glimmer of hope to start turning things around. Throughout the track, the band imparts such a palpable sense of optimism, whether that’s in the uplifting instrumentation or the lead singer’s emotive performance.
Stretching over four and a half minutes, Castlecombe Drive traverses stripped-back lows that allow for vulnerability and enlivening crescendos that beckon forth some much needed catharsis. It’s safe to say that any listener will feel some weight lift off their shoulders after giving ‘Blue Skies’ a spin.
