SAPPHIRE is a rising star in the British music scene and a vocal advocate for Gen Z narratives. A seasoned artist since the age of 7, SAPPHIRE‘s recent metamorphosis was spurred by the challenging experiences of 2022, marked by a surge of cyber-hate. Transcending the darkness, the singer-songwriter poured her emotions into a musical canvas, resulting in a five-track EP, titled test drive, that defies norms and radiates positivity.
The focus track ‘wasting my time’ epitomizes SAPPHIRE‘s recent growth, showcasing her remarkable vocal range and delivering an uplifting anthem of empowerment. The EP further unfolds with ‘dangerously’, a poignant exploration of post-love emotions, and ‘oxygen’, a whimsical indie-pop narrative dissecting controlling relationships. Throughout, the textured beats and expressive vocals weave a tapestry of self-discovery.
The EP’s genesis emerged from a period of emotional turmoil. Battling online hate, she retreated to the studio, experimenting with diverse sounds and embracing a newfound creative freedom. As she explains, “I started writing this EP last year after experiencing one of the hardest moments of my life. I was getting an insane amount of hate online and it killed me inside. I felt lost, hurt, and completely out of control. I had no ability to remove people’s posts about me and nowhere to hide from it. I knew that the only way I could heal was by creating more music and testing out all sorts of different sounds… Damn, it made me so happy. I’m very grateful that I got to work with people that were happy to play around with vibes and sounds, I felt so much joy every time I went into the studio as I got to test out something totally different every. single. time.”
With additional tracks like the explosive ‘corvette’ and the dance-worthy ‘crisis’, SAPPHIRE embraces innovation while rediscovering her confidence. The test drive EP reaffirms this creative’s determination to rise above adversity, culminating in a musical expression that serves as a powerful voice for her generation.
