As humans, we often feel seperate from the rest of nature. It’s as though an invisible barrier has come down between ourselves and the wider world, yet we forget that we’re also organic beings. An essential way to ground ourselves in the environment is through music, especially sounds that are flowing, multi-faceted and reflective of our humanity. Today, we’re turning to the divine talents of Nashville-based outfit Highland Kites whose single ‘We Both Know It’ tunes into that innate intuition.
From their upcoming EP which explores parameter of the human experience, this single is a unique insight into the lead singe Marissa‘s mindset. As she openly shares, “It’s an honest confession of the flaws in my personality and how they affect my relationships. It’s an introspective exploration of my inner self, and it served as a catalyst for my personal growth and transformation.”
Progressing steadily through tapped percussion and earthy bass courtesy of Nigel Briggs, alongside a tinkling piano melody, the songwriter explores these flaws with great vulnerability. As she sings, “I’m the sharp edged, I’m the rough pieces, we both know it.” Yet, it’s not self-depreciating either, instead it’s an act of self-compassion to put one’s mistakes under scrutiny with an eye to finding resolution. Even beyond all these confessional lyrics, the core truth in ‘We Both Know It’ is that she misses the person that she hurt. Through the bittersweet lens of retrospection, this song comes to new understandings of the self.
