Dublin-based Sunburn’s ‘Bring Me The Sky’ reflect on grief and loss

Making their first appearance on Unrecorded is the rising Dublin indie band Sunburn who have steadily been releasing tracks since 2020. While their previous releases have offered up more vibrant and extroverted versions of their contemporary indie-rock sound, their latest single ‘Bring Me The Sky’ display the band’s promising versatility. It’s a more mellow, introspective, and serious piece of songwriting that conveys an introspective turn to one’s inner psyche.

Opening with deftly interwoven strings and paced percussion, Sunburn set a contemplative tone for a track that explores themes of grief and loss. Reflecting on the mortality of life, brooding vocals confess that “I’m not scared of growing old, feeling these walls decay, inside my bones.” Following this first minute of considered musing, an insistent drum beat invites in a cathartic chorus that provides an outlet for those bottled-up emotions. You won’t be able to help but sway to lapping waves of intense self-expression, especially the rhythmic vocals that purposefully emphasise the meaning of each word. It’s truly one of those tracks that wraps you up in its embrace, delivering earwormy lyrics that tap into deeper thoughts, leading you to reflect on your own personal challenges.

With its expansive production, relatable lyrics, and captivating instrumentation ‘Bring Me The Sky’ has all the makings for commercial success, although Sunburn’s talents are far from pedestrian.
