Hailing from Upstate New York, the earnest four-piece Head Sound are emerging as a band determined to make shoegaze that’s set apart from the crowd. With a slew of demos already under their belt, the outfit release official single ‘Like A Painting’, with takes all those familiar dream-pop and shoegaze elements and transforms them into an invigorating landscape sure to wake up even the sleepiest of listeners.
Inspired by the likes of My Bloody Valentine, Sigur Ros, Slowdive, and Radiohead, it’s clear that Head Sound isn’t afraid of taking energetic leaps into the unknown, mixing and melding together seemingly disparate elements to provide a unique soundscape. That’s what you’ll hear in ‘Like A Painting’, which opens with hauntingly unfamiliar yet irresistibly arresting introduction designed to grip one’s attention. It’s not long before the track bursts into life with a siren call of undulating guitars and crashing percussion. Weaved in amongst this tempestuous soundtrack is starry-eyed vocals that drift melodiously through the intense yet welcoming sonic waves. Stretching over four and a half minutes, this track mediates between floating ambience and surging angular refrains. This changeability alongside the introspective lyrics reflects the experience of love, loss and longing through suffering. Step by step, one finds a way to coexist with the sorrow and eventually uncover joy again.
Not only is ‘Like A Painting’ our first official taste of what this bold New York band is all about, but it’s also a look ahead to Head Sound‘s upcoming debut album.
