If you’re a fan of Dermot Kennedy, Paris Paloma, or some solid indie songwriting, then look no further than Dom Malin. Following up on a successful 2023, this one-to-watch ascends to even greater heights this year with the resplendent new release ‘Surface’. With an authentic vocal that balances unpolished directness and melodious finesse, Malin‘s lyrics are a vulnerable and raw portrayal of what it feels like to be an outsider.
If you’ve ever found yourself on the fringes, whether that be in social situations, at work or school, or with society at large, you’ll know it can be hard to describe the invisible barrier that alienates you from everyone else. This is where troubadours like Malin step in. Through ‘Surface’, he draws parallels with the metaphorical image of the water’s surface, it is not impenetrable, but can have devastating effects. We’re struck by the emotional veracity of the hooky lyric, “seconds from the surface and I’ve been left out, trying to be noticed, but I’ve already drowned.”
There’s such a potent stain of honesty to Dom Malin‘s songwriting, and not just in the lyrics. The classic combination of the guitar, bass, percussion, and keys has a certain timeless quality, creating a sound that doesn’t try to conform to trends. Instead ‘Surface’ reflects the talent of this standout musician. More from Dom Malin is all we ask this year.
