London-based Italian impresario Giack Bazz (born Federico Giacobazzi) returns from his recent hiatus with the fresh and unfiltered new single ‘Funny Days’. Before we dig into that track, let’s get to know this Mediterranean musician a little better. His music journey leads all the way back to 2008 when he wrote his very first song. Since then, he released his crowd-funded debut album Childhood Dream (2015), followed by a double vinyl release for sophomore record Giack Bazz Is Not Famous (2018). The years 2019 to 2020 were arguably the most prolific for Giacobazzi, when he first released a 20-minute-long album inspired by Japanese poetry, Haikufy, and then (at the other end of the spectrum), a 60-hour-long behemoth Impression A.I.. Over the pandemic, he took a backseat, but that didn’t mean his creativity burnt out. Written over the lockdown, he released Just A Little Bit Famous in 2023.
Now that we’re all caught up, let’s turn our attention to the here and now. Giack Bazz is now gearing up for the release of his newest project, Bedtime Stories For Computers, for which he called upon two complete bands, as well as violins, trombones and flutes from the Orchestra
Filarmonica del Teatro Comunale di Bologna. Our first taste of this upcoming record is, of course, ‘Funny Days’. Packed with the angst and grit of someone just trying to survive amongst the litany of life’s twists and turns. Combining acoustic strings with beachside riffs, sloping percussion, and dreamy-eyed bass, the result propels the track forward, but in an uneven and unpredictable manner.
As the song progresses, the instrumentation becomes more forceful and Bazz‘s voice turns from a tone of dull acceptance to one of impassioned desperations. He repeatedly sings, “these days I’d better really do something with my life,” and yet what that something is… it isn’t clear. The song’s crescendo of feedback-heavy guitar and thundering drums emphasise that frustration and knowing you need to change, yet you don’t know where to start. With that, ‘Funny Days’ is the unbridled anthem for the directionless masses that we’ve been waiting for.
