The title of Sophia Stephens‘ latest single should tell you everything you need to know about the evolution of this Indiana creative’s sound. ‘Fervor’ means an “intense and passionate feeling”, while archaically it was used to describe an “intense heat”; both of these definitions could easily apply to Stephens‘ sound.
From the very start, our attention is gripped by a modulated notes that provide a minimalist backdrop to the singer’s unique vocal style. Over those first 30 seconds, the soundtrack gradually evolves from a serene quietude into a bold wall of sound formed from fiery guitars and frenetic drums. It’s this edgy soundscape that further propels Stephens‘ extraordinarily powerful vocals that portray both stylistic control and unleashed emotions. It’s interesting to know that ‘Fervor’ was originally written as a simpler guitar-vocal track, until producer Trey Vittetoe who amplified the initial track into one that’s more progressive, assertive, and strong-willed.
In contrast to the immense feeling that Sophia Stephens so artfully conveys through her performance, the lyrics tell a different story. She portrays a fractious relationship of arguments, pain and miscommunication, and ultimately she confesses, “don’t feel that fervor,” in a way to reclaim her heart. It’s incredible that this 17-year-old singer-songwriter possesses so much wisdom and lived experience, alongside her potent, distinctive vocals. We sincerely can’t wait to hear what she has in store for us next.
