OK Doomer’s debut single ‘Rivers Cuomo’ artfully navigates loss

It’s always a privilege to be able to join a band or artist on their journey right from the very start. It’s an aspect of reviewing songs that never gets old for us. Speaking of which, today we’re pleased to introduce the debut single of OK Doomer, aka the London-based musician Lou Doyle.

Recorded in Hamburg, produced by Hannes Plattmeier, and mastered by Heba Kadry in Brooklyn, OK Doomer‘s first single ‘Rivers Cuomo’ has a truly cross-continental sound which combines sweeping melodies of British dream-pop with the swaying rhythms of American lo-fi rock. The result is a fresh and nostalgic take on dreamy 90s rock and indie-pop that wistfully evokes past memories through the lens of bittersweet reflection. Written in order to process the loss of a teenage friendship when Doyle’s friend left for university in the States, it’s such an earnest and refreshing take on this relatable theme.

As the song progresses, it loses that initial starry-eyed fascination with the past and takes on an grittier, more expressive tone. Returning to such memories can be like holding a eautiful glass object to admire, only for it to shatter in our hands and reopening old wounds. That being said, authentic tracks like ‘Rivers Cuomo’ can allow us to work through loss, longing and hurt. This songwriter might not be able to restore the friendship to what it once was, but he can transform those complex emotions into angular guitars, surfy rhythms, shimmering synths, and cathartic lyrics.

You can also listen to ‘River Cuomo’ in our Indie Rockers and Shades of Pop playlists.
