‘Trouble’ deepens the emotional and sonic complexity of Conchis‘ forthcoming album Chapters, pushing the boundaries of her signature blend of electronic pop and experimental soundscapes. The Finnish artist explores the darker side of relationships in this track, reflecting on personal experiences with unhealthy romantic entanglements. This thematic darkness is mirrored in both the production and the lyricism, creating a cohesive listening experience that balances introspective storytelling with immersive sound design.
What sets ‘Trouble’ apart is the meticulous production work done in collaboration with producer Jonas Verwijnen. The track subtly integrates organic, elemental sounds to enhance the emotional weight of the narrative. Drawing inspiration from the four elements—earth, water, fire, and air—Conchis and Verwijnen used samples like gravel, fire crackles, and stones, embedding them within the electronic framework to evoke the sensation of fire’s heat and danger. These elements are incorporated so subtly that they are almost imperceptible, yet they add a tactile depth that brings the song’s core message to life.
Speaking about the context behind the single, Conchis shares that, “In the past, I’ve had a tendency to pick men who aren’t necessarily healthy for me. ‘Trouble’ is a reflection of that topic and how I’m still drawn to certain types of men despite knowing better. It’s about the push and pull in a relationship and how we act against our better judgment.”
Conchis‘ vocal performance also plays a crucial role in conveying the tension within ‘Trouble’. Her voice oscillates between restrained caution and a seductive, siren-like pull, reinforcing the track’s exploration of risky emotional territory.
