Dawn Cadence summons dark-pop magic with ‘holywater’

No one sounds quite like Dawn Cadence. That’s the first thought that struck us when we heard the Montreal artist’s newest single ‘holywater’. Traversing realms of dark-pop and indie-electronica, the experimental piece of music is nothing short of ethereal. Mixing and mastering by Kiri Stensby, who has previously worked with Eartheater, Lolahol, and Caroline Polachek, has helped to craft the hihgly atmospheric production. This experimental alt-pop soundscape is the perfect backdrop for Cadence‘s arresting vocal performance.

From the very start ‘holywater’ is simply captivating. It opens with bellowing bass notes and hovering electronica, setting the tone for the poetic lyrics which are delivered line by line ofering glimpses into the song’s unfolding events. The high-contrast between mellifluous vocals and jagged synths further add to the sense of dramatic tension. Even as the sounds drop away over the closing seconds, the intensity does not dissapate.

By the end of ‘holywater’, there’s a sense that Dawn Cadence has left this chapter open to us. We’re left under the artist’s spell as we await her upcoming mini-EP, sacré coeur. Already, she is becoming a recognisable name in the Montreal scene, such as performing at this year’s POP Montreal Festival, and we’re sure that her bold style and willingness to push boundaries will resonate with listeners far beyond her local scene.

You can also listen to ‘holywater’ in our Electro Feels and Outsiders Club playlists.
