It’s no secret that we’re big fans of Southend-on-Sea’s most promising indie band The Trusted. Over several singles we’ve watched these former school friends grow in confidence and heard their sound evolve, becoming better and better. Their newest track ‘The Lightning’ is another demonstration of why this four-piece should be on your one-to-watch list this year.
Taking inspiration from the natural phenomenon of lightning, this song is an electrifying expression “ego, self-worth and inner greatness,” as frontman Tom Cunningham summarises. This theme is also emphasised by the vibrant synergy between organic construction and synth keys. In this this way, there’s a nostalgic atmosphere to ‘The Lightning’, as it’s reminiscent of 2010s synth-infused indie-rock, like that pioneered by The 1975 and Two Door Cinema Club. Taking all of this into consideration, the result of The Trusted‘s new track is undoubtedly an aesthetically well-directed indie banger, but it also holds a much deeper message.
As Cunningham explains, “The song delves into the introspective battle we all face when looking in the mirror, confronting our true potential. It’s a powerful reminder that within each of us lies a spark of brilliance—our very own bolt of lightning. Too often, we hold it back. ‘The Lightning’ calls on us to unleash that energy and embrace our greatness.”
There’s a sense of that introspectiveness in the verses where the frontman’s dulcet tones expose his vulnerability over the melodious “aha-aha” backing vocals and striking synths. By contrast, the chorus swoops in with a bright urgency designed to flash away those doubts and remind the listener that you have the power within to discover your potential. It’s such a necessary message for these trying times and it shows just how much The Trusted add to UK music scene.
