‘What Did I Think Would Happen’ is Arliston’s latest exploration of nostalgia & heartbreak

Offering another taste of their upcoming album, Disappointment Machine, Arliston share ‘What Did I Think Would Happen‘ a poignant exploration of unrequited love. It’s a sonic time capsule, a heart-wrenching love song wrapped in the warm glow of nostalgia, which instantly transport listeners to a bygone era of VHS tapes and white-noise. This nostalgic backdrop sets the stage for a deeply personal exploration of unrequited love.

Guided by a piano melody, the song gradually builds in intensity, like a slow-motion train wreck that you can’t look away from. Jack Ratcliffe‘s vocals, oscillating between piercing falsetto and a deeper register, add a layer of emotional complexity. The song’s restraint is its greatest strength, as Arliston masterfully balances vulnerability and avoidance. The addition of wheezing brass and discordant piano notes adds a touch of chaos to the otherwise serene soundscape.

Speaking about the new single, Ratcliffe shares: “This is one of my favourite songs on the album. We captured something that was very raw and at the same time feels gentle and intimate. It’s one of the hardest things to do: capture a strong emotion without screaming and shouting. But, with this one we managed to very lightly hold this poignant thing in the palm of the hand and express it with not much more than a whisper.”

‘What Did I Think Would Happen‘ is a cinematic experience that leaves a lasting impression. The track feels like a prologue to a much larger story, a heart-bruised opening scene that leaves listeners eager for more. Arliston‘s ability to blend nostalgia, emotion, and sonic experimentation is truly remarkable, making this track a must-listen for fans of heartfelt indie music.
