Irish indie-rock newcomers The Mercadonnas release ferocious ‘Animals’

Ireland’s indie-rock upstarts The Mercadonnas made their debut earlier this year with ‘Céad Míle Fáilte’ and now the band are following that up with their sophomore single ‘Animals’. Although only their second track in, ‘Animals’ takes no prisoners – it’s raw, ferocious, and uncontainable. To begin with, this track might appear as a domesticated creature with its hypnotic guitar melody, but soon enough it reveals it’s true form with roaring guitars, galloping percussion and primal lyricism. In particular, frontman Jack O’Flaherty’s vocals cut through the noise like a battle cry, rallying against our age of digital digital and diminishing attention spans.

As O’Flaherty states with a sentiment of disillusionment, “We’ve had our concentration stolen, but worse, they made us do it to ourselves!”

This sense of urgency is also poured into the distorted guitars, each note bristling with rebellion, courtesy of guitarist Eoin Coogan. The drums are also relentless, due to Mark Wogan’s furious efforts, further propelling this extremely time-sensitive message. Both chaotic and cathartic, ‘Animals’ mirrors a collective anxiety, one that belongs to a generation overwhelmed by the constant barrage of notifications and noise. The Mercadonnas’ indie-rock and post-punk fuelled response perfectly captures the frustration and provides a welcome escape where you can also sarcastically sing “la, la, la la” while ignoring your phone for a few minutes.
