Background Music For Family Arguments, Drug Store Raid’s riotous debut album

Recently, Drug Store Raid have made a few appearances on Unrecorded with their gritty and rebellious post-punk anthems, like ‘I Wanna Be A Hipster’ and ‘Vi Är Finnjävlar’. All of this Finnish fury has been leading up to the band’s debut album, Background Music for Family Arguments, a chaotic and captivating 35-minute whirlwind that defies genre boundaries. With a thrilling blend of post-punk, noise-rock, indie-dance, jazz-funk, and no-wave, this record is equal parts intoxicating and disorienting.

More like manifesto from Finland’s disillusioned youth than anything else you’re likely to hear, Drug Store Raid are throwing up a middle finger to society’s norms, absurdities, forced politeness, and even the sub-culture that they belong to. They’re not afraid to diving right into the absurd and the grotesque, all while grappling with the existential dread of modern life. One of the more psychedelic tracks ‘Americana’ seems like such a timely release with the recent US elections. While others have an enduring quality like the unapologetic ‘Who Knows Jack Shit About Mental Health’.

One of the album’s focal points is focus track ‘Gutter’, which really epitomises the band’s raw energy and uncompromising attitude. A cacophony of distorted guitars, pounding drums, and snarling vocals, this track is a sonic assault that leaves you breathless and begging for more.

Throughout Background Music for Family Arguments listeners will be challenged to step outside of their comfort zone and will also be invited to find solidarity with the band’s five charismatic characters’. Their raw talent and infectious energy is a reminder that music can be both beautiful and brutal.

You can listen to the album focus track ‘Gutter’ on Outsiders Club and Indie Rockers playlist.
