Messy Eater embraces human infallibility with grooving ‘I’m A Mess Right Now’

In the space where Beck’s Odelay meets Gayngs’s Relayted, you’ll find Messy Eater‘s (aka Pete Bott) delightfully chaotic and playful funk track ‘I’m A Mess Right Now’. This scrappy, sun-soaked single is the perfect vehicle for this York-based artist’s sardonic commentary on the absurdities and realities of modern life. From the very start of this track, our attention was caught by the strutting groove of a laidback, retro drum machine, which sets the tone for Messy Eater‘s equally smooth lyrics. He opens with, “I’m just skin and bones with a bubblegum brain, waiting here for the gravy train, but it ain’t coming anytime soon.” This first line poses questions on mortality, capitalism, feudalism and well… locomotive mundanity.

As the track progresses, Messy Eater continues to roll out the sarcastic swagger supported by a sampled clavinet, live drums, and fuzzed guitar. It’s interesting that this 90s-infused groover entices the listener to move their body while ruminating on human infallibility, but that’s part of it’s magic. It’s relatable to mess everything up, to be a mess yourself, even to eat messily. This sense of unity comes through strongest with the choral singing of “I’m a mess right now but that’s cool, that’s fine, I’m a mess right now, aren’t you?”.

We love that self-aware spin of flipping the mic on the listener, it makes you stop for a moment and wonder if you should answer Bott‘s question. Whether or not you are in fact a mess at this very moment, anyone can dive into the kaleidoscopic sampledelica of Messy Eater‘s brilliant new track.
