Introducing Laura Mock, an incredibly talented singer-songwriter who is establishing herself as a compelling voice in contemporary folk-pop with her debut EP, home//body. This landmark release is a heartfelt exploration of identity, belonging, and the multifaceted concept of “home.” This concept is drawn from Mock‘s Maine upbringing, a north-eastern American state steeped in history, folk tales, and a place where the old often runs into the new. This dynamic setting comes through in the songwriter’s careful balance of timeless folk influences and a fresh, bold arrangement that is both soothing and surprising.
The EP opens with ‘Acadia’, a suitable title which could be drawn from the Greek meaning, “a place of rural peace in pastoral poetry,” This tranquil location could very well be Mock‘s hometown, which she seeks to leave behind in search of growth, yet this desire is pinned against a bittersweet tension that “home” might feel different when she returns. Alternatively, that vision of “acadia” might be the future that lies ahead… only by leaving the nest can one discover the truth. This critical milestone is captured in the track’s mellow arrangement of strings and piano, adjoined by Mock‘s affecting vocal melodies.
Each subsequent track adds another layer to her themes of home, belonging and self-exploration. ‘Landlocked’ reflects on the grounding comfort of relationships, blending gentle acoustic guitar with atmospheric strings. Again Mock offers evocative contrast with third single ‘Ribs’, another ambient track but altered with eerie melodies that give way to self-doubt.
Fourth track ‘CTC’ is the most pop-orientated of the tracks, its more upbeat nature acting as a beacon of hope. The bubbling beats and catchy melodies are really uplifting while Mock‘s empowering lyrics remind listeners that happiness begins with self acceptance. The EP closes with ‘Rocky Shores’, another nod to Maine and its rugged coastline. In this way, the final track acts as a “homecoming” with its brighter, country-tinged sound marking a departure from the more atmospheric soundscapes. It’s a moment for celebration, for reflecting on the journey, and for appreciating the simple things in life.
We really loved everything about home//body EP, from the lush instrumentation, evocative lyrics, and relatable themes. It’s an engaging journey through nostalgia, growth, and the quest to find one’s place in an ever-changing world.
