NYC-based producer Mike Brun, aka Ciao Ciao Marigold, has crafted an album that’s equal parts groovy and introspective. Titled satsuma, it’s a hazy cocktail of funky basslines, shimmering guitars, and kaleidoscopic synths. Listening to this is like dipping into a surreal, sonic orange grove, where every track peels back a layer of juicy, psychedelic goodness.
Each track on satsuma is named after a different type of orange, but this isn’t just a quirky naming scheme, it’s also a nod to the album’s global inspirations. Take ‘byeonggyul’, a dreamy ode to Korean artist Mid-Air Thief, where ethereal melodies drift like clouds across a vibey drum groove. Or ‘sumo’, a heavyweight jam packed with juicy guitar tones thick enough to slice with a knife. These tracks are like little pockets of world-building, designed to saturate your senses.
Brun’s craftsmanship shines through every beat and chord. Playing nearly every instrument himself, he brings a tactile warmth to the genre, a welcome departure from the cookie-cutter lo-fi churned out by algorithms. Paired with Hannah van der Weide’s whimsical, animated visuals, satsuma becomes an experience; an invitation to step into Ciao Ciao Marigold‘s technicolor world.
With singles already racking up streams and accolades, satsuma feels like the moment Ciao Ciao Marigold breaks out of its quiet, cultish allure into something much bigger, more refined and more creative.
