At the end of last year, Delta of Venus returned from a hiatus of several years with their double A-side ‘Disengaged b/w Slipping’. This dreamy fusion of indie-pop and shoegaze was a welcome comeback for fans of this Connecticut-based band and new fans won’t be able to ignore the refreshing unconventionality of this four-piece. For example, each member chose instruments they couldn’t play to record this new track to ensure a sound as unique as possible.
With that brief introduction, let’s dive into the two tracks. First up, ‘Disengaged’ is a shimmery, starry-eyed piece of spacious production constructed out of delicate strings, syncopated beats, and an airy bassline. Adding to this warm, twinkling indie-pop arrangement are some ethereal yet restrained vocals. This atmospheric nature carries on into ‘Slipping’, albeit on the shoegazier end of the spectrum. Here a denser, more rhythmic force takes over, hinting at the band’s post-punk energy.
The reason that we’re returning to Delta of Venus‘ 2024 release is due to the appearance of a new music video. These long-form visuals reimagine the life of Joan of Arc, the medieval French warrior, but instead set in the modern-day Connecticut town of Mystic. This historical outsider is the perfect embodiment of this band’s against the grain approach.
From the life of a heroic figure to their sound, Delta of Venus’ return is all about reinvention and ‘Disengaged b/w Slipping’ is nothing short of a compelling listen.
You can listen to ‘Disengaged’ in our Outsiders Club playlist.
