‘Slowcoach’ is the latest genre-blending joyride from Messy Eater

After the caffeine-induced jitters of ‘Work Life Balance’ and the sincere self-deprecation of ‘I’m A Mess Right Now’, Messy Eater (aka Pete Bott) returns with ‘Slowcoach’, the first taste of his sophomore EP, Southern Fried. Where his first EP, Starters, whet our appetite with a flavour-packed, genre-blending sound, this latest single marks a new direction for the Messy Eater project.

Built on a winding country-blues guitar and intertwined with boom-bap beats, the track conjures up sloping and sleepy textures, reminiscent of the heady malaise after a long, sun-soaked day. Messy Eater deploys his specialised skills by merging a vast array of sounds that in other hands would be a chaotic sprawl. Here the artist pulls a nineties hip-hop swagger into the rhythmic breeze of this undeniably cheeky and charming track.

As always, Bott injects some grounding humanity into his track, such as the line “not so fast, slowcoach.” It’s a lyric that joins themes of modernity, daily life, stress and work in his other releases. A friendly piece of advice that encourages listeners to stop and think.

‘Slowcoach’ is packed with Messy Eater‘s signature quirkiness. A genre-melting joyride that’s not easy to categorise but one that has kept us endlessly entertained.
