Messy Eater navigates life’s chaos with groovey ‘On The Right Track’

If there was ever an artist who was on the right track, it would be Messy Eater, who has become quite the permanent fixture here at Unrecorded. To simply put it, Pete Bott (the man behind the moniker) can’t miss. After championing previous singles like ‘Slowcoach’ and ‘Work Life Balance’, this York-based musician had already set the bar high, but with his newest release ‘On The Right Track’, he’s pushing the sonic horizons of his project even further.

Grounded in his sharp, lyrical wit and vintage-meets-futuristic production, ‘On The Right Track’ opens with woozy, ’70s-influenced keys that merge into a soulful sample; this gives the effect of a sonic palette honed by years of vinyl crate digging. You can really hear those undertones of Pulling influences from The Avalanches, Beck and Beastie Boys in this beautifully disorienting track. Adding to the vibe, Bott’s voice exudes warmth and pensiveness, as though he was a close friend imparting well-meaning advice.

As well as being a genuinely good time, this track is packed with philosophical gems, like “the path of life is no Roman road”, which weave their way into his layered and soulful production. We just can’t get enough of Messy Eater, he makes organising chaos appear seamless in a way that’s clever, confident and yet so inviting.

You can also listen to ‘On The Right Track’ in our Soul & Grooves and Outsiders Club playlists.
