Hailing from the quaint Surrey town of Redhill comes a thunderous force of snarling guitars and driving rhythms from Canada Hill with their new single ‘His Room’. This visceral track portrays the restrictive, suffocating experience of being emotionally trapped in a relationship. From the very first beat, a growing unease, an aching solitude, an emotional turmoil begins to simmer, then boil and then overflow in searing waves. Its impact is gritty and unpolished.
That sense of restless claustrophobia carries on over into the punchy drums, tangled riffs and a clawing melody that cuts through the noise. Paired with this intense instrumentation, the vocals offer a hazy and detached narrative; a concerted effort to pull oneself away from the prison-like relationship. Yet, that commanding voice is somewhat threadbare at the edges, slowly unravelling under the pressure.
Recorded in their practice-room-turned-studio, the band’s DIY ethos shines through every second of this track, leaving a lasting mark through the electrifying immediacy of their performance. One can’t help but draw parallels to early Interpol, The Strokes, or White Lies, although Canada Hill have their own scrappy, post-punk infused approach.
‘His Room’ is a welcome reprieve from the over-produced, over-polished tracks that all too often dominate the mainstream these days. It’s an instinctive sound, one that echoes with angst and buzzes with a raw determination.
