It’s been a couple of years since we last caught up with Leeds musician Oliver Pinder, but now he’s back on our radar with this evocative and touching new single ‘love of my life’. It’s a tender track that transforms grief and its associated memories into something cathartic, soothing and grounding. Written as an homage to his grandmother whose husband passed away decades ago, but she never chose to remarry, this single is brimming with genuine feelings of love, loss and unending connection thanks to such a personal connection.
This track starts off in intimate indie-folk territory, with an opening of sparse acoustic strings and Pinder‘s warm voice, which delivers that aching central line, “love of my life”. Even though the idea of a soul mate can seem elusive, but as Pinder‘s short-and-sweet lyrics suggest there’s really no need to overcomplicate it. The songwriter gently unpacks his grandmother’s words of lived experience, allowing plenty of space for listeners to interpret them through their own lens.
As the track progresses, it becomes a more expansive and commanding affair that culminates in a full-band crescendo acting as a tidal wave of emotion. This is all wrapped up with a sweeping, atmospheric production that helps to deliver the simple honesty at the song’s core without filtering out any of that authentic feeling. It’s this quiet yet powerful intent that has us filled with anticipation for Pinder‘s upcoming EP, too late to tell you.
