Ratfink! turn trash into treasure on Plastic Bits

There’s a charming immediacy to Ratfink!’s latest single ‘Plastic Bits’, which is DIY right to its core. The Melbourne duo (Liv and Raph) self-recorded this indie gem in their shared house and it’s that homey, down-to-earth feel that really makes this track stand out. The production has been kept purposefully lo-fi, allowing the meandering alt-folk melodies to weave their way through this hazy soundscape. It’s reminiscent of 60s protest songs, with a shimmering rock undertone and almost formless construction, as though the singer’s thoughts were being summoned in real time.

Built on a three-chord structure, ‘Plastic Bits’ appears deceptively simple, yet all those particular choices from the stripped-back recording to the light-touch production to the patina of surf-rock strings create a refreshingly grounded sonic space. This approach elevates the impact of this song’s message; that of anger against the path of pollution, destruction and devastation that humans leave in their wake. Ratfink!’s frustration at all these “plastic bits” simmers beneath the buoyant alt-pop hooks.

It’s a tricky balance to combine serious topics with seemingly carefree sounds, yet Ratfink! manage to walk that line with a rare authenticity. They aren’t pushing an agenda, preaching from a pulpit, or even trying to persuade the listener; they’re simply stating the facts. This observational commentary holds so much power because it’s accessible. ‘Plastic Bits‘ is the kind of track that’ll drift around your mind days after hearing it, with those hopping surf-pop strings and ironic quips like “spend the day in perfect decay” cropping up when you have a moment of quiet reflection.

As well as being one of the most original things we’ve heard for a while, ‘Plastic Bits’ is also a tempting teaser to Ratfink!‘s upcoming album WHEN U WERE MINE.
