Nathaniel Paul returns once again with his signature non-conformity, this time in the form of a full album project, titled Steady As We Go. It’s an impressive eight-track record that quietly rallies against a music industry increasingly overtaken by AI-generated artists and overproduced sounds with a refreshing reminder of how poignant classic songwriting can be. Paul‘s choice to record the album live at Leighton Concert Hall at the University of Notre Dame has imprinted that sense of space and reality, emphasising that human touch on these acoustic-led tracks. Although recorded in a grand hall, Steady As We Go keeps a consistent focus on vulnerability with a simple-yet-effective triptych of voice, guitar and harmonica leading listeners through this intimate collection of songs.
Opening with the uplifting ‘Over the Water’, this single walks the fine line between future-facing optimism and nostalgic reflection, but it ultimately lands on a key message of cherishing the present moment. From there, Paul navigates themes of melancholy and hope with ease, whether that’s the expansive contemplation in ‘When Stars Weep’ or the celebration of nature in ‘Beauty That We See’. Meanwhile, ‘It’s All Blue’ leans further into those moments of stillness. It’s clear that no life is lived out in isolation; we’re all connected to each other, to the world and to the universe.
A special highlight for us is the previously featured single ‘The Girl With No Tattoo’, rendered into a touching acoustic version here. Although comparatively minimalist, the impact of Paul‘s soothing vocal and rich guitar still fills the space with an understated elegance.
As you’ll hear, these songs don’t hide behind production tricks or digital gloss; it’s all about the compelling appeal of honesty. In an era when mass production often takes precedence over authentic story-driven songwriting, this stripped-down folk record is an essential palette cleanser that takes us back to the basics.
