‘Before Your Eyes’ is the first glimpse into Philadelphia outfit Betty Lawless‘ forthcoming album Prometheus, set to appear in 2026. It’s this long-sighted projection that signals an exciting new chapter for a band that’s been going since 2019 when six friends Ryan Monteith, Colin Cooper, Dominic Rossi, Liam Conner, Will Finnegan and Sean Monteith found common creative ground. What started off as a DIY garage-rock project has continued to evolve into a more refined, exploratory sound that now takes earthy rock undertones and combines them with indie-folk songwriting, dream-pop melodies and alt-country twangs.
The group’s new song takes the tradition of bar-room storytelling and transforms it into a hazy narrative that drifts between daydream fuzziness and grounded reality. Blurred, tape-driven textures offset the clean, open arrangement resulting in a somewhat disorientating effect that pulls the listener between states of clarity and fractured perception. Meanwhile, exuberant alt-rock guitars and energetic percussion help to toe the line so that this song doesn’t spin out into cerebral confusion.
‘Before Your Eyes’ is left purposefully unpolished, retaining the intimate magic of recording the track in Betty Lawless‘ distinctive Philly row house. What you can hear is that lived-in warmth of a late-night songwriting session with friends. It’s a true DIY creation that reflects years of sympathetic collaboration. From here, we’ll be following the band’s journey as they head towards Prometheus.
