Wetsuit’s ‘Cider’ glows with a hazy warmth

Brooklyn four-piece Wetsuit recently reaffirmed their spot in the indie-rock circuit with their sophomore album Yarn for Future Scarves. Kicking off this ten-track record is the intoxicating single ‘Cider’, which is a hazy trip down memory lane with the apple-sugar sweetness, fizzy restlessness and fuzzy recollections echoing the joys of late-summer evenings.

Opening with humming synths, we’re pulled into a humid city night by frontwoman Allison Becker‘s vibrant performance where her lyrics unravel snapshots of the sleepless urban life. From trash baking in the sun, to kids screaming through sprinklers, to the distant jingle of an ice cream truck; it’s a visceral listening experience. Amidst this patchwork of chaos is a quiet beauty, like being struck with a moment of clarity despite the rush of disorientating scenes.

Alongside Becker‘s lyrical conviction is a cascade of spiraling guitars, courtesy of Anders Nils, which further echo the brilliant unpredictability of our shared existence. Sitting between ’90s alt-rock grit and dreamlike shoegaze glow, it’s clear that Wetsuit have carved out a sonic space where noise and melody coexist in harmony.

Recorded with Alex Farrar (Wednesday, Indigo de Souza) at Drop of Sun Studios in Asheville, the analog warmth lends ‘Cider’ a handmade intimacy, as if the track itself were stitched together from half-remembered summers. It’s a confident opening to Wetsuit’s second album.
