Hailing from the gritty north-west town of Oldham, emerging five-piece Mercy Kelly make their mark with powerful new single ‘Breathe For Her’. It immediately draws you in with a sturdy framework of scintillating guitar lines, tightly-knit percussion and reverberating bass, all of which work together to lead you down a path towards emotional relief. This cathartic soundscape is reminiscent of British indie icons like The Killers, Simple Minds or Snow Patrol, who also share that penchant for evocatively atmospheric songwriting.
Guiding the way through is frontman Jack Marland whose commanding vocal performance reveals a tender fragility with lines like, “I’d breathe for her if she asked me to.” It’s a raw confession drenched in palpable longing, yet it’s not overdone. This open, cinematic sound is brought right home by producer Alex Quinn, working out of Liverpool’s Kempston Street Studio, whose sympathetic approach gives every instrumental element space to breathe and move. By the time the track reaches its soaring climax, Mercy Kelly sound less like a band on the rise and more like one arriving fully formed.
From listening to ‘Breathe For Her’, it’s clear that Mercy Kelly‘s band members share an unfiltered chemistry. That authentic heart poured into this indie track makes it a perfect listen for anyone who has been brave enough to gamble on love. In short this is an aching, uplifting and resonating.
