Dimitri von Büren’s oneiristic ‘What I Feel’ dreams of the future

Distilling a signature blend of folky introspection, melodic sensitivity and retro-tinged optimism, Parisian multi-instrumentalist Dimitri von Büren releases ‘What I Feel’. This single draws inspiration from a wide-range of soft-rock songwriting from Coldplay to Keane to The Kooks, yet the overall impression is one of sincere originality. It’s an intimate and tender confession of love, one that’s tinged with regret, melancholy, hope and promise. While it’s very much a reflective song, it’s not stuck in lingering memories of the past, instead it looks towards future horizons.

Part of this song’s authenticity is von Büren‘s hands-on approach to songwriting and recording. As such, he was able to shape ‘What I Feel’ from start to finish staying true to his bedroom-pop ethos, which imbues the production with a lush, restrained, yet jangly charm. With delicate guitar strings, airy synth textures and subtle rhythms, this artist replicates a state of absent-minded daydreaming, also known as oneirism. Drifting between vulnerability and determination, von Büren‘s vocals are an open invitation to the listener to explore the depths of their own emotions.

Although it’s a standout, ‘What I Feel’ shouldn’t be considered as a standalone single, rather it’s a continuation of von Büren‘s creative arc. From his 2018 debut to now, his eclectic tastes of psychedelic folk, ’00s indie-rock, soulful lounge and bedroom-pop are the threads that this artist has so skilfully woven together.
