At this time of year, new songs tend to fall into one of two camps; either cheery holiday music or introspective odes to the bleak winter. There isn’t anything wrong with either of those and we certainly find ourselves listening to a fair share of festive tunes and melancholic forays, but sometimes you want to mix it up. As such, ‘B-Train’ has entered our playlist rotation like a ray of sunlight breaking through December’s rain-laden clouds.
This slice of unexpected optimism arrives from Brooklyn indie-soul collective Every Us, who seek to capture those universal, life-affirming moments that take the listener out of themselves. It’s fitting then that this track is set on the B-train, which is a New York City subway service connecting the Bronx to Brighton Beach (with many stops in-between, of course). Public transport is a great way to perceive humanity in one of its most unfiltered forms and that’s exactly what Every Us is embracing in their newest single.
Led by soulful vocalist Chynna Sherrod and crafted by skilled producer Ryan Jones, ‘B-Train’ is truly a love song to city life, daily mundanity and connection. Throughout the track, we find sparks of sincere relatability in lines like, “I know it won’t be long, ’till we start moving on, the only ones who get me through, are waiting up too.” This vignette of friendships and community is framed beautifully by upbeat trip-hop percussion, rich horns, and layered vocals that surround the listener in warm, inviting affirmations.
Every Us‘ mix of understated drums, sample-forward textures and a timeless lyrical dialogue really reminds us of projects like Jungle, BADBADNOTGOOD and Parcels. ‘B-Train’ is all about looking for value in the small things, whether that be staying up late with friends, heading home after a long day or watching the city unfold as you take the train home. We seriously can” wait to hear what else Every Us has in store on their upcoming EP.
