Earlier this year, the Brighton-based Madrid-born artist Luan Luan first appeared on our radar with ‘Yellow’, which introduced their vivid songwriting and bold soundscapes to our ears. Now, we’re following up with this promising musician with their latest single ‘Northern Lights’, which breaks through the bleak winter skies with slick grooves, vibrant strings and catchy pop-leaning hooks. At this time of year, we really do crave tracks that bring more light and life into our minds; after the emotional exhaustion of Christmas Day, this desire for an uplifting listen is stronger than ever.
Luan Luan takes the magical atmospheric event of the northern lights and translates that same rare wonderment into a feeling of belonging. This song embraces dancing like no one is watching, finding a community that feels like family, expressing yourself without a worry of how others will judge you. It’s something that so many of us wish for and ‘Northern Lights’ is just the inspiration you might be looking for.
Those themes of identity, connection and self-love are cemented by the funky bass lines, indie-pop melodies, strutting guitar rhythms and buoyant percussion. These lively elements come together to draw the listener out onto the dance-floor, which in this case is a space that’s both deeply personal yet generously open. Whether you’re throwing shapes at home in your bedroom or surrounded by some gloriously unique individuals, you can’t go wrong with ‘Northern Lights’.
You can also listen to ‘Northern Lights’ in our Outsiders Club playlist.
