Bologna quartet Gee Whiz! embrace fun with ‘Big Fireworks’

Bologna is known as Italy’s food capital and perhaps Gee Whiz! took inspiration from their city’s culture to deliver a track that is a sweet, unpredictable sugar rush. Clocking in at just under two minutes ‘Big Fireworks’ is a sonic glucose hit right to the veins that is a rapid-fire run through vintage guitar struts, a rocketing bass line and unrelenting percussion.

This heavily distorted sprint to the finish line also flicks speedily through images and themes, like a spinning montage of intoxicated late-nights and hazy early mornings. It builds a buzzing anticipation, reminding one of that intense optimism of youth.

Gee Whiz! further explore this unbridled nostalgia through the ’90s alt-rock and early ’00s indie motifs peppered throughout ‘Big Fireworks’. Glockenspiels wink between these dynamic indie layers, while half-shouting vocals barrel ahead into the unknown. Despite the impression of seemingly uncontrolled chaos, it’s clear that this Bologna quartet is a determined bunch of musicians.

This is music to let loose to, to embrace freedom and live in the now, however brief it may be.

You can listen to ‘Big Fireworks’ in our Outsiders Club playlist.
