Back in 2025, emerging songwriter Ava Valianti popped up on our radar with coming-of-age anthem ‘Distant’. Almost a year later and with an EP in the middle, she’s back in our ears once again with her latest stand-out single ‘Sophomore Slump’, which deepens her exploration of growing up in this modern age.
At 16-years-old, Valianti is reporting live from the ground with her emotionally self-aware, poignantly reflective and, most of all, honest songwriting. In this instance, she muses on the feeling where rising waves of youthful ambition crash into the shorelines of reality. As she sings, “opportunities keep slipping away day after day, so focussed on failure, can’t focus on anyone else’s success.” To be honest, whatever your age, this is a sentiment that so many of us share.
While the themes between ‘Distant’ and ‘Sophomore Slump’ appear joined together, this more recent release signals a shift toward a bolder, more textured sound for Valianti. Over a steady drum sequence, slightly fuzzed-out guitars strut their way across the soundscape, boosting this artist’s defiant americana-tinged vocals. As the track progresses, that hook keeps us, well… hooked!
Confessional, anthemic and undeniably catchy – ‘Sophomore Slump’ is all the evidence you should need to jump on the Ava Valianti train. We can’t wait to see where we end up next.
