Paper Crown is the Norwegian duo of Ørnulv Snortheim (guitarist and producer) and Johanne Kippersund (vocalist) who create songs from their small town that are both timeless and decades-spanning. Lifted from their new album, Letters, is the stunning new single ‘Four Leaf Clover’, which taps into the organic warmth of ’70s recordings and the gritty spirit of ’90s pop-rock.
This melodic out-of-time affair kicks off with dreamy strings, laid-back percussion and subtle synths and that perfectly set the tone for Kippersund’s mesmerising voice. Overall, it’s a track that leans into softness, where those gentle guitar lines blend into the shimmering melodies and misty-eyed production. It’s not the typically polished pop number that dominates playlists these day, instead these two musicians have created something that sounds natural, flowing and alive.
Kippersund‘s soulful tones lead the listeners through the luscious vintage arrangement as she unpacks themes of entitlement, perfection and expectation. The “four-leaf clover”, a rare talisman of good luck, represents something unattainable; a standard that someone else holds you up to but one that just isn’t possible. With this revelation, ‘Four Leaf Clover’ becomes a bold stance of empowerment. It’s an understated reminder that you don’t need to change for anyone’s unrealistic projections.
