‘My Own Miserable’ is the first release of 2019 from Floridian four piece Jordan Esker & The Hundred Percent. It’s a gloriously glistening menagerie of guitars, dynamic indie drums, stellar vocals and rich harmonies.
“My Own Miserable came from a rather happy place honestly. I revisited an old iPhone voice memo I had titled “emo jazz”, and looped some beat that I made with my guitar and started singing and it all came out. I wrote about sometimes feeling like a selfish baby in a relationship: “side with me; you already pay the fee.” I had revisited the lyrics in “Video Game” by Lana Del Rey and loved how she the speaker she painted in that song sounded so flawed and desperate for the other person’s love. Looking back, I realize I was writing from my interpretation of the perspective of the other person in that relationship, a character who views problems in their relationship as sourced from how the other person acts with them or treats them. Giving a voice to that selfish side makes a reality out of what acting like that looks like and wisens you up when you sense you’re headed in that direction.” – Jordan Esker
